I couldn’t really come up with a title of this without sounding like we were traded which Matt HAS NOT been traded…yet at least. This is just a blog talking about what is like being on a team when trade rumors are swirling all around you and then when “blockbuster” trades happen. To be honest, when Matt was in the minor leagues, we didn’t really pay attention that closely to trades because we never thought Matt would really be a piece and we didn’t feel the effects of a trade very much in the lower levels of the minor leagues. But ever since Matt has been put on the 40-man, we watch trade stuff like hawks. OK, that might be dramatic. But every move has a direct hit on each player on the 40-man and then to the (now) 26-man roster for the season. Also from my standpoint, my mind goes straight to the logistics of a trade. Learning a new team, navigating new cities, different organizations ways of doing things. We were packing the car to come to Arizona when the Mookie trade rumors really started heating up. And all I could think about was we’re going to get nice and settled in AZ and we’re going to get the call that Matt’s been traded to the Red Sox. Then we would have to figure out Florida housing, make that move, and just on and on and on of these things going through my mind of what I would have to do within days because ya know report dates are next week. Which L O L, I don’t know why I even let myself do that because we don’t have control either way but still.
Obviously, it hasn’t happened and Matt’s name was never mentioned in the potential trade anyway. It’s hard to not think about all the scenarios though. Another side of us is always laughing at the rumors because they are just that until it’s made official by the teams and MLB. And there are always a ton of them and most of them are ridiculously inaccurate. But we have known guys who have found out they are being traded through Twitter and then get the phone call a few minutes or hours later… could you imagine… what other job does that happen in?! Then there are ways big trades change the rosters and you start calculating are these trades — are they good or not helpful for Matt and his chances of being on the big league roster? *shoulder shrug* Again, it doesn’t really matter because it’s a business. All Matt can do is go out and be the best he can be everyday. Cliche or not, it’s true. Some of our friends told us they were in the car and they got a call and got a little nervous because could have been about the trade but it just ended up being a family member asking about the trade. haha When we found out the Mookie trade was pretty much done, we were at dinner with friends not even by our phones. Someone texted and asked if we had saw then we atomically get on Twitter and start checking what’s going on. Then it just started spinning out of control with different teams involved and different players being thrown out. We finally were like OK, we’ll hear something if Matt is going somewhere. Your mindset is just really different when trades are happening when you have a chance to be on the big league roster. Every moving piece effects different players in different ways and you might not even know until the season starts. When players tell you they aren’t paying attention, they are probably lying. They might not be taking it seriously, but they are certainly paying attention. I never really know if blog posts like this are informing or just me rambling. But after the trade, I had people asking us what was going on/was Matt involved so I thought it was helpful for me to write it all out. For now, we're still here, LA. :)

Very well said. Funny though, I was just telling my wife the other day, "as long as Beaty isn't a part of the deal." It was hard enough losing Verdugo but I get it. Beaty came in kinda the way Taylor came in a few years back. He's a clutch bat that the Dodgers need in situations and I'm sure that the Dodgers know that. I became a fan a few years ago when he was with the Quakes. Anyway keep up the good writing. I'm glad I stumbled upon this blog.

I really like these insider views of baseball and how the game affects the ballplayer and their family. It makes the game human and you do it it justice. As an LA native, I'm really happy you two are with Dodgers. Can't wait to get to some games this season, go Dodgers!
