Greetings from Arizona! Yes, we’re back. After the OKC Dodgers lost to Memphis in the playoffs, Matt had two days in Tennessee before he was sent back to Arizona. I stayed in TN because my Granddaddy got us tickets to the Vols vs. Florida game. (I should know not to make plays in this baseball life we live in…but I tried.) It worked out because I got to take my best friend Kelsey, and the trip was her first time to Neyland Stadium. Also I got to be in town when my other best friend Jesse had their second boy, Wade. Got to stay in my parents new house — which was the first time I hadn’t stayed in the only house I grew up in. (Shout out to my parents and their loft for housing all our stuff. And it’s A LOT of stuff.) Honestly, after the past several months, being at the only place I truly call “home” for now was really needed and nice. People at church and other people I ran into consecutive days asked if I had moved back because not used to seeing me that much. HAHA Fair question because I haven’t spent that much time in Dresden since I moved back for the summer before my junior year in college I guess. But no, I didn’t move back. And now Grainger and I are back in Arizona with Matty B. So why are we in Arizona? Matt got sent to be a part of the stay hot camp/group. The Dodgers sent a handful of guys to Arizona to “stay hot” in case of emergency/something crazy happens in the big leagues while they’re making a playoff push. So basically Matt goes to the field everyday and lifts, hits off live pitching, etc. Instructional (instructs) league is in full force now too so Matt will be playing in some of those games as well. (Instructs is usually where guys who were just drafted this year are sent after the season to get more reps/work on things or pitchers/other players the Dodgers feel like need to work on certain things.) Of course, this is a good thing. But there is a little background I think is worth sharing. I’ll give the short story… Matt decided he wanted to play winter ball. His agent reaches out to teams. Agent gets a deal for Matt to play the first half (October through right before Thanksgiving). Agent gets deal approved through Dodgers. Matt signs contract. Fast forward a few weeks later and Dodgers decide they only want him to play the second half (right after Thanksgiving through December.) We’re not very happy. Agent is not very happy. But what can we do…nothing. Agent just keeps asking why the sudden change, and Dodgers say they have other plans for Matt during the first half. Which was this stay hot group and getting reps at instructs if needed in October. This year is Matt’s rule five year or Rule 5 Draft protection year. Basically that means the Dodgers have to put Matt on their 40-man roster by middleish of December or he can be picked up by another team. I’ll explain all of that better as we see what happens in a few months. Matt is still playing winter ball the second half as long as he stays healthy. We’re really excited about it. I can’t wait to share more and take you guys along. I explained those parts of it because we’re not sure exactly what the motives were to change when Matt can go play. Stay hot camp? Rule 5 year? Obviously a lot of decisions are made in baseball, and we’re just along for the ride. Because of those decisions we're in Arizona for now! I hope this wasn’t too confusing. Some things that happen I can’t share fully now…but one day…I’ll write a book. :) Stay tuned!
